Mavs End MSU Tournament With Split

MANKATO, Minn. - The Mavericks used a Brooke Wagner homer and Kristin Wellwood's grand slam to subdue the Peacocks of Upper Iowa, 13-1, in five innings, but came up just short in the second game of their doubleheader Sunday, as the Mavs ended regular season play with an extra inning loss to Concordia-St. Paul, 5-4.
The University of Nebraska at Omaha finished the MSU Microtel Inn & Suites Tournament with a record of 4-1, moving the 21st ranked Mavericks to 29-16 on the season.
UNO will be back in action when they open North Central Conference Tournament play Friday May 4, in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Upper Iowa Boxscore
The Mavericks got on the scoreboard early against Upper Iowa, plating two runs in the home half of the second inning before exploding for six runs in the third and five more in the fourth. Led by Wagner's 3-for-3 day at the plate, the Mavs' offense tallied 13 hits, highlighted by Wagner's first homer run of the season and Wellwood, a freshman from Omaha, blasted a pinch-hit grand slam in the bottom of the fourth, her first home run as a Maverick.
Melissa Negrete continued her excellence in the circle. Following up Saturday's performance that saw her earn a pair of saves and a win, by going five strong innings, holding Upper Iowa batters to just two hits while striking out two others in the Maverick victory.
Concodia-St.Paul Boxscore
The afternoon game saw the Mavs jump out to an earlier 1-0 lead when Alison Jergenson scored on a Concordia-St. Paul error in the top of the first. UNO extended the lead in the the fifth when Brooke Wagner and Trieghtin Yates drove in a pair of runs to make it 3-1, before the Golden Bears Amanda Yurek belted a three-run home run off UNO's Cheris Kuster giving Concordia-St. Paul a 4-3 advantage.
Trailing by one, Jenifer McDowell led off the seventh with a solo home run tying the score and forcing the game into extra innings where CSU's Tiffani Rodd singled to left off of Maverick pitcher Melissa Negrete in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Abby Brundidge and giving the Golden Bears a 5-4 win.
Negrete threw three innings of relief in the loss, dropping her to 10-7 on the season while UNO starter Kuster went four and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs and striking out eight before giving way to Negrete in the fifth.
