Mavs' Win Streak Broken, But Avenge Loss With 9 HR

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- A walk-off grand slam allowed North Dakota to stop the University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball team's nine-game win streak, 5-1, but the Mavericks bounced back to win a 22-14 slugfest to salvage a split in a North Central Conference doubleheader Sunday at Kraft Field.
The Mavericks (29-17, 13-3 NCC) have still won 20 of their last 24 games, while the Sioux (15-16, 4-10) won just their third conference game in their last eight tries.
Matt Boro doubled with one out in the second inning of the first game, coming in to score on an error. The 1-0 lead held up until the last of the seventh, as Josh Lundin (4-5) held the Sioux scoreless on five hits through six and two-thirds innings. But North Dakota put together an amazing two-out rally, starting with two singles off Lundin. Closer Shawn Smith came on, but allowed a single and a walk before Anthony Brenner ended the game with a bases-loaded blast, his fourth of the year.
UNO exacted revenge in a big way in the second game, blasting nine home runs. Chris Weimer starting it off with a two-run shot in the first, his team-leading 13th of the season. The Sioux tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but the Mavs plated eight runs in the second. Boro led off the inning with a home run, and Bryan Frew added a three-run tater later in the inning, his third of the year. Later, Boro went deep for the second time in the inning, a two-run homer. Those were Boro's third and fourth home runs of the season.
The Mavericks scored eight more in the fourth inning. Tyler Cloyd hit his sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot, and Matt Meyer added a three-run homer, his first of the season. Alex Kotera then joined the party, socking a two-run homer. He went deep for the second time the following inning, a three-run homer, giving him three for the season, closing out the UNO scoring.
UNO will close out the regular season next week, hosting first-place Minnesota State, Mankato, for doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Boys Town.
