Dirty Dozens - Mavs Sweep Washburn

OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball team scored 12 runs in both ends of a doubleheader, sweeping nonconference opponent Washburn, 12-2 and 12-8, Tuesday afternoon at Boys Town.
On a chilly, windy day, the Mavericks (13-13) got on the board quickly as leadoff man Bryan Frew started things off with a home run to right-center field, his second of the season. UNO would score five more in the first inning, taking advantage of four fielding errors by the Ichabods (12-13), plating six runs on just two hits.
The Mavs added two in the second and one in the fourth for a commanding 9-0 lead. A two-run double in the sixth highlighted a three-run inning, making it 12-1 at that point. Tyler Cloyd (4-2) earned the win, allowing just two hits and a walk in three innings of work. Tim Huber, Ryan Lafountain and Jason Peterson went the rest of the way, surrendering two runs on just five hits.
Washburn looked poised to exact revenge in game two, scoring single runs in each of the first three innings. But the Mavs offense exploded for 10 runs in the fourth inning, all with two outs. Matt Meyer opened the floodgates with a bases-loaded double, scoring two runs. Frew walked to re-load the bases, then Alex Kotera was hit by a pitch to drive in a run. Evan Porter singled through the left side of the infield to bring in two more runs. Chris Weimer, who opened the inning with a double, singled to drive in one more. Brian Goliber drew a walk to again load the bases, then Matt Eikmeier also drew a free pass to force home a run. Matt Boro cleared the bases with a double to left-center, but the inning ended with Boro getting caught trying to stretch it to a triple.
Josh Lundin (2-3) threw a scoreless fourth to put himself in position for the win. The Ichabods scratched out runs in the fifth and seventh, plus three in the sixth to make the game close. But UNO closer Steve Smith held them off, recording the last four outs for his sixth save of the season.
UNO opens North Central Conference play this weekend, hosting St. Cloud State for twin-bills Friday at Saturday at noon.
