South Dakota is Mavs' 1st NCC Foe Friday

The Mavericks will meet South Dakota in the opening game of the North Central Conference tournament on Friday at 10 a.m. at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls, S.D. UNO is the No. 2 seed in the seven-team tournament, which will wind up with Saturday's 4 p.m. championship game.

Maverick head coach Jeanne Tostenson Scarpello is in her eighth season at UNO with a record of 348-105-1. She has led the team to six NCC titles and six straight regional tournament appearances, including the national title in 2001. Her assistants are Michala Cimino, in her 10th season, Kevin Dunn and Cory Petermann.

Leslie Svoboda's homer at North Dakota April 20 put her in the career lead, breaking a tie with Nicole Vos at 30. Svoboda goes into this week with 32 round-trippers...Junior Jenifer McDowell tied a school record with three home runs against Augustana April 17, driving in 8 runs in a 9-3 win. The feat tied Michala Cimino's performance in 1994 on both counts. It also earned her NCC player of the week honors for April 17-22. Tracy Carey also drove in 8 runs in a 1994 game, which at the time was an NCAA II record. All three now share the UNO record..Sara Sortino, with 77, is one walk shy of tying the career record held by Mindy Hahne, 1995-98...Despite having 19 games canceled by the weather, the Mavericks are one-win away from their 18th straight 30-win season...Brooke Wagner went 13-for-24 last week (.542) and extended her hitting streak to 12 games.
On Deck
The Mavs, ranked No. 4 in the region, can earn an automatic spot in the NCAA II tournament by winning the NCC title. If unsuccessful, UNO could still earn an at-large berth to the eight-team meet, which would begin May 10.
