Mavs and Huskies Split Easter Doubleheader

OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball team earned a North Central Conference split with visiting St. Cloud State, as the Mavericks dominated the first game of the doubleheader, 10-1, before the Huskies won a close 4-3 contest at Boys Town.
UNO stays at the .500 mark on the season at 14-14, 1-1 in NCC play. St. Cloud is now 6-14, 1-1.
Tyler Cloyd tossed a three-hitter for the Mavs in the opener, allowing just one unearned run in the first inning, improving to 5-2 on the season and dropping his ERA to 1.60. It was also his third complete game. The offense steadily produced, putting up runs in every inning. Tim Huber dealt the biggest blow with a bases-loaded double in the fifth inning, making the score 7-1 at that point. He would score on a groundout by Casey Klapperich. Alex Kotera homered in the seventh, his first of the season, and Chris Weimer added an RBI double.
Huber took the mound in the second game, but found himself in early trouble. The Huskies scored in each of the first two innings, including a solo home run by Dan Gaughan in the second. The Mavs had a golden opportunity in the third inning against St. Cloud starter Ryan Carlson. Bryan Frew started the inning with an infield single, then Kotera and Even Porter drew walks to load the bases. Weimer singled to drive in a run, keeping the bases loaded. But Carlson wriggled off the hook by striking out the next three batters.
Carlson went on to win his first game of the season with Adam McGrane earning ihs first save with a scoreless seventh. Huber took the loss to go to 2-1.
The teams meet again Monday at Boys Town for another doubleheader, starting at noon.
