Negrete Tosses Shutout as Mavs, Huskies Split

Freshman Melissa Negrete tossed a three-hit shutout and Jenifer McDowell and Treightin Yates drove in runs as the Mavericks defeated St. Cloud State, 2-0, for a split of their North Central Conference doubleheader Monday at Claussen-Westgate Field. The Huskies' Olivia Graham singled home Rachel Haines for a 2-1, 10-inning win over UNO in the first game.
UNO, now 15-10 overall and 4-2 in the NCC, is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Augustana Tuesday at 3 p.m. St. Cloud State is now 15-18 and 1-3.
In the first game, SCSU's Jenny Gensch homered to right field in the first inning for the early lead. UNO tied the game on Leslie Svoboda's fourth homer of the year to left in the sixth. The Mavericks had runners on base every inning, but stranded 10. In the 10th, Svoboda hit a one-out double to left, but winning pitcher Stef Schroeder struck out the final two batters.
UNO senior right-hander Cheris Kuster fanned eight in falling to 7-4. Schroeder struck out seven to improve to 7-6.
In the second game, the Mavericks struck quickly. Lead-off hitter Alison Jergenson singled to left, stole second, advanced to third on an infield out and scored on Yates' infield out.
UNO added an insurance run in the fourth when shortstop Brooke Wagner singled to center, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Sara Sortino. McDowell followed with a single up the middle to score Wagner.
Negrete, 3-3, struck out five and walked none in notching her first career shutout.
