UNO Advances on Negrete 4-Hitter

MANKATO, Minn. -- Freshman Melissa Negrete held Winona State to four hits and Chanel Reaves drove in two runs with a two-out, second-inning single to lift the Mavericks to a 3-0 win over Winona State in the first round of the NCAA II North Central Regional Thursday.
UNO (31-18) will meet Minnesota State, Mankatoa 4-1 winner over Missouri Western, at 5:30 Friday night.
Maverick head coach Jeanne Scarpello elected to start Negrete, a true freshman from Omaha, over four-time all-North Central Conference senior Cheris Kuster for a couple of reasons.
"Cheris had already faced Winona State twice this year (a win and a loss) and Melissa usually works ahead in the count. She did a good job today, although she fell behind some," Scarpello said.
Negrete, now 11-8, walked none, struck out four and survived four errors to strand six runners.
Meanwhile, Scarpello had mixed feelings about the offense. She was pleased with the production from the bottom of the batting order. Catcher Brianna Cataudella, batting eighth, had two doubles and scored one run and right fielder Reaves, batting ninth, doubled her season's RBI total with two singles.
"It's huge to get hits from the bottom of the order like that," Scarpello said. "Still, I'm concerned about the missed opportunities and strikeouts in key situations."
The Mavericks stranded nine runners, leaving the bases loaded in both the third and fourth without scoring.
Jenifer McDowell led off the second for UNO and pinch-runner Amanda Bader moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice. Sara Sortino then walked and moved to second when Treightin Yates was safe on a fielder's choice. After Cataudella fanned, Reaves dumped a single down the first base line to score Baderf and Sortino.
Cataudella led off the sixth with a double and moved to third on a single by Reaves, then scored when Winona State catcher Megan Paulson's throw to second to try and catch Reaves stealing sailed into center field.
