Svoboda Slam Helps Mavs Upset MSU, 8-2

MANKATO, Minn. -- Leslie Svoboda's grand slam capped a seven-run fourth inning as UNO capitalized on five errors by Minnesota State, Mankato for an 8-2 victory in the second round of the NCAA II North Central Regional softball tournament Friday night.
The Mavericks, 32-18, will meet No. 21 Southwest Minnesota State Saturday afternoon at 3 at Caswell Park.
"The kids kind of felt that Leslie would hit one when she came up," UNO head coach Jeanne Scarpello said.
Svoboda blasted her 10th homer of the year and career-leading 34th with two out in the fourth after the Mavs had already scored three runs, two on errors and one on a fielder's choice.
UNO took a 1-0 lead in the third when Brianna Cataudella singled, advanced to third on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Chanel Reaves and scored on Kellyn Kramolisch's sacrifice fly to center.
Melissa Negrete retired the first 11 batters she faced to get her second win of the tournament and improve to 12-8. Negrete's bid for a second no-hitter of the season was broken up by a home run by Kari Hudson in the fourth. UNO center fielder Alison Jergenson chased the ball down in right center and had the ball in her glove, but dropped it as she crashed through the temporary fence.
"Melissa's on a roll right now," Scarpello said. "She did a great job of keeping the ball down and getting ground balls."
Negrete retired 14 batters on ground balls, had no walks and just one strikeout- the final out of the game.
Southwest Minnesota State advanced with a 2-1, 11-inning win over No. 2 seeded and No. 9 ranked Emporia State. Earlier in the day, Central Missouri and Winona State were eliminated.
