Cal. State-Stanislaus Mavs' 1st National Opponent

The Mavericks will meet California State-Stanislaus in the first round of the NCAA Division II softball tournament at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio, Thursday night at 6:30. UNO swept through the North Central Regional tournament with a 4-0 record to earn their sixth berth in the NCAA Division II national tournament.

The Record Nebraska-Omaha is 34-18 on the year. In UNO's five previous national tournament appearances, the Mavericks have finished 3rd, 5th, 2nd and 3rd from 1994-97 and won the championship in 2001 under current head coach Jeanne Scarpello.
The Coach Maverick head coach Jeanne Tostenson Scarpello is in her eighth season at UNO with a record of 353-107-1. She has led the team to six NCC titles and eight straight regional tournament appearances, including the national title in 2001. Her assistants are Michala Cimino, in her 10th season, Kevin Dunn and Cory Petermann.
Notebook... Leslie Svoboda's homer at North Dakota April 20 put her in the career lead, breaking a tie with Nicole Vos at 30. Svoboda goes into this week with 34 round-trippers...Junior Jenifer McDowell tied a school record with three home runs against Augustana April 17, driving in 8 runs in a 9-3 win. The feat tied Michala Cimino's performance in 1994 on both counts. It also earned her NCC player of the week honors for April 17-22. Tracy Carey also drove in 8 runs in a 1994 game, which at the time was an NCAA II record. All three now share the UNO record..Sara Sortino, with 80, holds the career lead in walks...Despite having 19 games canceled by the weather, the Mavericks registered their 18th straight 30-win season...Cheris Kuster became the fifth Mav to earn all-NCC honors four straight years. Svoboda, Sortino and Alison Jergenson joined her on the 19-member team...Jergenson, Kellyn Kramolisch and Wagner all were named to the NCC all-academic team last week as well...Catcher Brianna Cataudella is hitting .625 in the month of May, including a .667 clip in the regional tourney to earn most outstanding player honors. She was hitting just .091 through April and now is at .211...Four Mavericks were named to the North Central Region all-tournament team: Melissa Negrete, Cataudella, Svoboda and Chanel Reaves ..Svoboda is tied for sixth in home runs in a season with 10. She set the one-season record last year with 21.
