CSU-Stanislaus Blanks Mavs in Championship Opener

AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha softball team was held to six hits as Cal State-Stanislaus took a 3-0 victory in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament Thursday night at Firestone Stadium.
The UNO pitching tandem of freshman Melissa Negrete (14-9) and senior Cheris Kuster held the Warriors to just six hits, also, but two of them were solo home runs from designated player Casey Stephensen, one off each hurler. Meanwhile, CSUS pitcher Jessica Gaumnitz (26-4) was able to hold the Mavericks scoreless.
UNO (34-19) will face Florida Southern Friday at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time in an elimination game. The Warriors improved to 50-18.
Junior right fielder Chanel Reaves went 3-for-3, recording three singles. The rest of them went only 3-for-23, despite a number of hard-hit balls.
"I wasn't disappointed with our selection of pitches to swing at," Mavericks coach Jeanne Scarpello said. "We hit the ball solid...we just couldn't find the holes. We were right there with the hits, we just didn't get them at the key moments."
CSUS will take on Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, who defeated Florida Southern, 3-1.
