Mavericks Eliminated by Mocs

AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha softball team was eliminated from the NCAA Championship tournament when Florida Southern pitcher Megan Brown tossed a three-hit shutout, leading the Moccasins to a 4-0 victory Friday afternoon at Firestone Stadium.
UNO ends its season at 34-20. FSU improved to 50-14.
Brown (33-9) was in command from start to finish. Alison Jurgenson and Leslie Svoboda drew walks in the first inning, but it was the only threat UNO could mount. The rest of the game all the Mavs could muster were singles by Kellyn Kramolisch, Brianna Cataudella and Chanel Reaves. Brown notched eight strikeouts, while every other out was recorded on a ground ball.
"Their pitcher did a great job," UNO coach Jeanne Scarpello said. "She kept the ball down and got us to hit easy groundouts."
UNO freshman pitcher Melissa Negrete (14-10) got tagged for all four runs on eight hits, plus five walks.
"We gave up a few too many walks," Scarpello said. "Those can haunt you, and they certainly did in this situation."
With only four seniors graduating, the young Mavericks who remain have gained great experience to build on, according to Scarpello.
"We're looking at this as a positive," she said. "This was great experience for our younger kids for them to want to get back here."
