May 19, 2007 | Baseball
WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Bryan Frew drove in two runs with an eighth-inning triple, leading the University of Nebraska at Omaha past eighth-ranked Central Missouri, 4-2, and into the finals of the NCAA Division II Central Regional Saturday afternoon at Crane Stadium.
UNO (35-22) will face Central Missouri again in the finals Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The Mavericks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Evan Porter singled home Chris Weimer in the bottom of the first and added another in the fourth when Brian Goliber scored on a UCM error.
Central Missouri tied the game in the seventh at 2-2 after Clay Weatherford scored on a Brian McBryde base hit off of UNO reliever Jason Peterson.
Frew broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth, following a Casey Klapperich infield single and Shawn Smith's first hit of the year, when he laced a triple into the left centerfield gap off of UCM closer Bryan Collins scoring Klapperich and Smith and giving the Mavs a 4-2 lead.
Ryan Hines started for UNO and turned in an impressive outing, going six innings and giving up just one run. But it was Blake Denoyer coming on to throw two scoreless innings of relief that recorded the victory for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks, who entered the six-team regional as the tournament's sixth seed, have now upset the top-two ranked teams in the region, Minnesota State, Mankato and Central Missouri.
