St. Cloud State Eliminates UNO, 3-2

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- St. Cloud State bunched three runs in the second inning and then rode the six-hit pitching of Stef Schroeder to eliminate the Mavericks, 3-2, in the rain-delayed North Central Conference softball tournament Friday night.
Earlier in the evening, Minnesota Duluth clubbed three home runs to send the Mavericks into the loser's bracket with a 6-1 setback after UNO had edged South Dakota, 5-4, in the opening game of the event. The start of the tournament was delayed four hours Friday because of rain and wet field conditions.
The Mavericks, now 30-18, will await word Sunday night on whether they will earn an at-large berth in the May 10-13 NCAA II North Central Regional tournament.
The Huskies used three singles, two errors and scored what proved to be the winning run when Courtney Schanks stole home to cap a three-run second in the final game. UNO rallied with a pair of runs in the fourth on Treightin Yates' two-run homer.
But Schroeder yielded only a two-out single by Yates in the sixth thereafter to earn the win.
In the first game, Yates doubled with two outs and scored on Brianna Cataudella's single in the bottom of the eighth inning to boost UNO past South Dakota, 5-4.
The Mavericks jumped out front early on Leslie Svoboda's ninth homer of the year, a two-run shot in the bottom of the first. USD answered in the third, bunching five hits to score three runs. But UNO tied in the bottom of the third when Svoboda singled home Alison Jergenson.
South Dakota reclaimed the lead, 4-3, in the top of the sixth when Tagney Jones drove in her third run of the day with a single. Again, UNO came back to forge a tie when shortstop Brooke Wagner ripped a double down the left field line to score Svoboda who had walked and advanced on a sacrifice by Jenifer McDowell.
Cheris Kuster earned the win in relief of starter Melissa Negrete, who pitched the first 5 2/3 innings, to improve to 15-6.
In the second game, UMD's Whitney Olson hammered a three-run homer in the second, Kristin Danielson a two-run shot in the fifth and Myriam Trepanier a solo homer in the seventh to account for all of the Bulldogs' runs.
UNO scored its run in the sixth when Cataudella singled home Sara Sortino.
