Mavs Split 2 Matches at Season-Opening UNO Classic

OMAHA, Neb. -- The 18th-ranked ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday at the Sapp Fieldhouse in the season-opening UNO Classic.
The Mavericks swept Montana State-Billings in the opener, 32-30, 30-16, 30-17. UNO lost a heartbreaker in the second match of the day to Minnesota State-Moorhead, 30-28, 22-30, 26-30, 30-28, 20-18.
Match 1: UNO vs. Montana State-Billings
Senior Nicole McLeod led the Maverick offense with 11 kills, while hitting .455 and adding two blocks in UNO's sweep over Montana State-Billings. Senior Carlie Christensen was also in double figures with 10 kills.
Christensen and sophomore Ellen Thommes both notched a match-high six blocks in the match as UNO held a 13-8 advantage on the defensive side of the net.
Senior Katie Agnew directed the UNO offense to a .262 attack percentage while the UNO defense held the Yellow Jackets to a -.008 hitting clip. Agnew registered 37 assists and eight digs in the match.
Sophomore Kayla Jansen led the UNO defense with a match-high 17 digs.
Match 2: UNO vs. Minnesota State-Moorhead
Five Mavericks recorded double-figure kill totals and the UNO defense combined for 135 digs but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks fell in five games to the Dragons.
UNO blew leads of 9-4 and 14-11 in the decisive fifth game, squandering four match points.
Sophomore Sara Kampschnieder recorded a double-double with 17 kills and a career-high 26 digs. Agnew also collected a double-double with a career-high 66 assists to go along with 13 digs.
Senior middle blocker Carlie Christensen added 17 kills and a match-high eight blocks. Also in double-figures were Kelli Goeser (18), Ellen Thommes (14), and Nicole McLeod (11).
The Maverick defense was once again led by Jansen who recorded a career-high 33 digs. Freshman Jamie Tooley added a career-high 27 digs. Junior Annie Rice collected 22 digs and a team-high three service aces.
The Mavericks will continue action on Saturday in the UNO Classic with UNO taking on Mary at 1 p.m. before concluding the tournament with a 5 p.m. match against Colorado State-Pueblo.
