Former Mav Kapels to Tour with AIA

Former Maverick basketball standout Calvin Kapels, the school's all-time leader in steals and a two-time all-North Central Conference player, will be part of an Athletes in Action team that will tour western Canada in October.
Kapels, from Columbus, Neb., scored 1,102 points during his 2002-06 Maverick career and stands No. 12 on the all-time chart. He recorded 191 steals in his career and also is No. 15 in three-point field goals with 69.
The 8-10-player AIA team, made up mostly of NCAA Division I and semi-pro players, will begin its 20-game tour in Edmonton Oct. 1 and will finish in Vancouver on Oct. 19.
Kapels helped lead the Mavericks to an 80-40 overall record and two regular season NCC championships as well as two NCAA II regional tournament berths during his career. He averaged 15.6 points and 6.8 rebounds his senior season.
