Mavs Break Out of Scoring Slump, Drop Sioux, 5-2

Junior midfielder Casey Bigsby scored two goals, while sophomore midfielder Lindsey Nealon scored the game-winner, as the University of Nebraska-Omaha soccer team defeated North Dakota, 5-2, in a North Central Conference match Friday afternoon at the new UNO Soccer Field.
Bigsby got the Mavericks (3-4, 2-1 NCC) on the board first, heading in a crossing pass from senior Brandie Beale at the 19:55 mark. Then at 39:43, Bigsby escaped from traffic with the ball at the top of the slot, firing a shot from 30 feet home for a 2-0 lead, where the score stood at halftime.
Lara Traczyk got UND (5-3, 0-2 NCC) on the board at 51:45, chipping home a shot against Mavs goalie Lauren Fox, who came into the game midway through the first half after starter Ellen Petersen suffered an ankle injury. But Nealon put in her first goal of the year, which proved to be the game-winner at the 74:15 mark, scoring from the top-left corner of the box off a pass from Tara Wegehaupt.
The Sioux's Megan Tracy scored on a penalty kick at 82:33 to cut the lead back to one late, but in the final few minutes, MaryClaire Murnan and Mykala Hanson scored insurance goals, with Beale and Amanda Iwansky picking up the assists, respectively.
The Mavericks return to action next weekend with two more NCC contests, hosting St. Cloud State Saturday at 1, then Minnesota State, Mankato Sunday, also at 1.
