Augustana Spills Mavericks, 80-70
Jan 10, 2008 | Women's Basketball
Augustana took advantage of two cold-shooting spells by the Mavericks to post an 80-70 win at Sapp Fieldhouse in the North Central Conference opener for both teams. The loss ended UNO's nine-game winning streak and dropped the Mavericks to 14-2.
The Mavericks scored the first nine points of the game before the Vikings responded with an 18-2 run, holding UNO to just one field goal in a five and a half-minute stretch. UNO, though, behind LaToya Wright's nine first-half points and seven by Cayla Hargrove, bounced back to claim a 40-37 lead at the break.
Augustana broke out fast in the second half, scoring seven straight points for a 44-40 lead and never trailed again. UNO managed to tie on short jumpers by Amanda Brodsack and Kylee Rinehart at 48. The Vikings then scored 11 straight points and held UNO scoreless for six and a half minutes.
Ellen Majewski's three-pointer sparked a 10-0 rally by the Mavericks. Kamillia Brown added another trey and a field goal and Jill Wolf scored on a layup in the run, pulling UNO within 59-58 with 8:03 to play.
The Vikings' Megan Doyle knocked down a pair of long thee-pointers to stop the rally and UNO could get no closer than five the rest of the way.
Hargrove led 12 players who scored for UNO with 12 points and Alyssa Green led both teams with 10 rebounds. The Viking defense held Wright without a second half point. UNO shot just 30.8 percent the second half and 37.1 percent for the game to Augustana's 51.9 percent.
Molly Hayes led the Vikings with 25 points and Amy Puthoff added 21. Hayes and Whitney Hofer each had eight rebounds.
UNO returns to the Fieldhouse to host Nebraska-Kearney Monday night at 6 in its final non-conference game of the season.
