RedHawks Down Mavericks, 6-3

OMAHA, Neb. -- Senior forward Mick Lawrence scored two goals and freshman Matt Ambroz scored another, but it wasn't enough, as the Mavericks fell to the No. 2-ranked Miami University RedHawks, 6-3, in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday night at the Qwest Center Omaha.
The loss drops UNO to 9-11-3 on the season and 6-8-3 in CCHA play, while Miami improves to 20-3-0 on the year and 12-3-0 in conference play.
The Mavericks and RedHawks will finish their two-game series Saturday night at the Qwest Center, with face off scheduled for 7:05.
UNO fell into a hole half way through the first frame when Miami senior Ryan Jones scored from a crowd in front of the net at 12:51, giving the Redhawks a 1-0 lead.
Miami added to their lead before intermission on a Gary Steffes goal at 14:01 making it 2-0.
A physical second period saw the Mavs draw even, 2-2, on a pair of Mick Lawrence power-play goals. Lawrence's first marker came just 50 seconds into the period, while the second found the net at 16:09. Senior Bryan Marshall and Junior Dan Charleston collected the assists on both of the goals.
The RedHawks managed to push themselves back out front at 16:50 of the second period on a Charley Fetzer score, retaking the lead 3-2 before the second intermission.
Ambroz made it 3-all at 2:55 of the third, scoring an unassisted goal off a rebound from in front of the Miami net.
Both teams traded scoring chances in the third, but it was Miami who was able to break the stalemate. Justin Mercier's power-play maker at 14:44 put the RedHawks up, 4-3, and Brian Kaufman's goal 68 seconds later pushed that lead to 5-3. Miami's Carter Camper added an empty-netter at 19:22 to put the game away and give the RedHawks a 6-3 victory over the Mavericks.
Marshall's two assist pushed his nation leading total to 25 and extended his point streak to 10 games, while Lawrence's two power-play markers ties him with Michigan's Kevin Porter for the most power-play goals in the country, 11, and moved his own point streak to six games.
