Nebraska-Kearney withstood a 14-point run by the Mavericks in the closing minutes to post a 67-63 non-conference victory over UNO at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse Monday night in front of 1,050 fans.
UNO, losing for the second straight game, fell to 14-3 before resuming North Central Conference action at Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon. UNK improved to 13-4.
UNO came from nine down in the early going against the Lopers and held a pair of one-point leads before trailing at the half, 32-31, despite shooting just 29.7 percent from the field.
UNK built a 46-36 lead five minutes into the second half and kept UNO at arm's length most of the way. Joni Mildenberger's two free shots with 5:57 left gave the Lopers their biggest lead of the night, 63-49.
The Mavericks got back into contention quickly as Ashley Nelson started the run with two free throws, followed by a three-pointer over the next 43 seconds. Amanda Brodsack followed with a layup, then Nelson and Lindsey Klug each hit shots and UNO trailed by 63-60 with 1:46 left.
After a UNO timeout, Mary Brown knocked down a three to tie the game at 63 with 66 seconds left.
But Jade Meads ended UNK's 5:35 scoreless streak with a jumper in traffic with 32 seconds to play. After a missed shot by the Mavericks, the Lopers' Amy Mathis rebounded, was fouled and hit two free shots with eight seconds left to seal the win.
Mathis scored a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead UNK, while Meads added 19 points and eight rebounds.
Cayla Hargrove's 12 points led UNO and Klug added 10.
