DULUTH, Minn. -- Alyssa Green scored 22 points to lead the University of Nebraska at Omaha women's basketball team back into the win column, as the Mavericks defeated Minnesota Duluth, 83-78, in North Central Conference action Saturday afternoon at Romano Gymnasium.
UNO snapped its brief two-game losing streak, improving to 15-3, 1-1 in NCC play, while the Bulldogs fell to 3-15, 0-4.
The Mavs got off to a slow start, failing to score until three minutes into the game on a layup by Green. UMD built a six-point lead at 14-8, but a 3-pointer by Ellen Majewski eventually tied the game at 17-all with 8:44 left. The Mavs would lead the rest of the half, though never by more than six points, holding a 40-34 lead at the break.
UNO took control to open the second half. Just six and a half minutes in, the Mavs built up a 15-point lead after a 10-0 run. The lead stayed in double digits most of the next several minutes, but the Bulldogs began to rally in the final four minutes. A 3-pointer by Stephanie Rieter with 38 seconds left cut the deficit all the way down to three points, but Green and Cayla Hargrove made all their foul shots in the final seconds to preserve the victory.
Green grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go with her 22 points. LaToya Wright added 15 points, while Mary Brown had 10. UNO shot a strong 55.6 percent in the first half, 46.8 percent for the game. The team also hit 80.8 percent from the free-throw line.
Reiter led the Bulldogs with 18 points, while Alissa Pauly and Kelsey Hewitt scored 12 each.
UNO takes on two more NCC foes next week. The Mavericks visit No. 10 South Dakota on Thursday, then host No. 1 North Dakota next Saturday.
