VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha women's basketball team suffered its third loss in four games, dropping a 78-57 North Central Conference decision to No. 6 South Dakota Thursday night at the DakotaDome.
The loss drops the Mavericks to 15-4 on the season, 1-2 in NCC play. The Coyotes extended their winning streak to 15 games, going to 17-1 overall, 3-0 in the NCC.
UNO suffered early shooting struggles, hitting only 28.6 percent in the first half, also committing 11 turnovers. USD also took some time getting into a rhythm, as the score stood at 18-15 with 7:20 to play. But the Coyotes rolled off 11 straight points from there, eventually taking a 36-22 lead into halftime.
The Mavs kept pace with South Dakota to open the second half, even cutting the lead down to nine points with 13:28 left after a 3-pointer by Cayla Hargrove, her fourth of the game, tying her career high. Again it was a nine-point game at 53-44 with 10:27 left, but from there the Coyotes took command, led by the league's top scorer, Jeana Hoffman, who knocked down three 3-pointers in a 9-0 run.
Hargrove finished with a career-high 25 points, adding a team-high six rebounds. Amanda Brodsack added 12 points. The duo combined to shoot 13 of 27 from the field. The rest of the team went 6 for 24.
Jeana Hoffman led the Coyotes with 16 points, followed by Jasmine Mosley with 12, and 11 each from Bridget Yoerger, Jenna Hoffman, and Amber Hegge.
The Mavericks next face No. 4 North Dakota Saturday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse.
