No. 20 Vikings Pull Away Late, Defeat Mavs

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha women's basketball team suffered its third loss in a row to a ranked opponent, as No. 20 Augustana defeated the Mavericks, 80-64, in a North Central Conference contest Thursday night at the Elmen Center.
The loss is UNO's fifth in six games, dropping its record to 15-6 overall, 1-4 in NCC play. The Vikings improve to 19-4 and 5-1, having won 10 of their last 11 games.
Amanda Brodsack opened the scoring, and a 3-pointer by Alyssa Green gave the Mavericks an early 5-0 lead. Augustana would take the five right back, setting the tone for a back-and-forth half that saw seven lead changes. A layup by Jill Wolf gave UNO a two-point with 7:01 left, but Ashley Holiday tied the game right back with a layup of her own. Liz Helsper followed with a 3-pointer to put the Vikings back in the lead. They would extend the margin to eight points with 3:19 left, eventually taking a 41-34 lead into halftime.
Brodsack and Green combined to score the first four points of the second half to trim Augustana's lead to three points. Again the score stayed tight, but this time the Mavericks could not catch the Vikings. After an Ashley Nelson basket again made it a three-point game at 13:41, Augustana scored eight straight points to pull away and coast to the win.
Brodsack led the Mavericks with 14 points and seven rebounds. The backcourt tandem of Amy Puthoff and Molly Hayes led the scoring for the Vikings, with Puthoff scoring 23, adding a team-high eight rebounds, while Hayes scored 21, dishing out six assists.
UNO returns home Saturday to face St. Cloud State at 2 p.m.
