UNO Set to Begin Second Half of MIAA Season

Weekly Notes
The UNO Maverick volleyball team (9-12, 5-5 MIAA) will begin the second half of the conference season when they travel to Joplin, Mo. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, for a 7 p.m. match at Missouri Southern. The Mavericks will then entertain 15th-ranked Pittsburg State at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24 and Southwest Baptist at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25.
A Closer Look
The Mavericks are currently 9-12 overall and 5-5 in the MIAA after losing a pair of marathon home matches last week to No. 22 Augustana and No. 14 Central Missouri. UNO has lost three-straight matches.
Nebraska-Omaha is led by junior Ellen Thommes, who is averaging a team best 3.03 kills per set with a .349 hitting percentage along with 1.03 blocks per set.
Missouri Southern is 6-15 overall and 1-8 in league play and has lost six-straight matches. The Lions are led by sophomore Jeanna Feldman who is averaging 2.60 kills and 2.36 digs per set.
UNO swept Missouri Southern in Omaha on Sept. 17 in the MIAA opener for both teams. Nebraska-Omaha leads the all-time series with the Lions, 3-1.
Pittsburg State is ranked No. 15 in the latest AVCA top 25 poll with a 21-5 overall mark and a 7-4 record in conference action. The Gorillas have won two-straight and own a victory over 10th-ranked Truman State.
PSU has a balanced attacked with four Gorilla attackers averaging over 2.6 kills per set. Senior Sammie Williams leads Pittsburg with 3.45 kills and 2.59 digs per set. Junior Pamela Cartagena is averageing 3.02 kills and a team-leading 4.64 digs per set. Senior Linda Igbinigie leads PSU defensively at the net with 1.03 blocks per set to go along with 2.66 kills per set offensively.
UNO leads the series with the Gorillas, 5-2. However, PSU has won the last two contests, including a three-set sweep on Sept. 19 in Pittsburg.
Southwest Baptist is currently 11-12 on the season and 3-7 in the MIAA. The Bearcats have won two out of their last three matches, including five-set victories over Missouri Southern and Fort Hays State.
SBU is led by freshman Ashley Jurgensmeyer and junior Kelsey Stewart who both are averaging a team-leading 2.87 kills per set. Jergensmeyer also leads the team with 1.08 blocks per set. Senior Shyrah Perry leads the backcourt with 4.50 digs per frame.
The Mavericks are 3-0 against SBU, including a three-set win on Sept. 20 in Bolivar.

In the CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll released on Oct. 20, five MIAA opponents were ranked in the top 20, including Washburn (No. 7), Emporia State (No. 9), Truman State (No. 10), Central Missouri (No. 13), and Pittsburg State (No. 15).

Thommes Earns Conference Honor
Junior middle blocker Ellen Thommes was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association offensive player of the week on Oct. 13.
Thommes hit .507 (38 kills, 3 errors, 69 attempts) and averaged 4.56 points per set as the Mavericks posted a 2-1 record for the week.
In a home sweep of Northwest Missouri State on Oct. 8, she hit .529 (10-1-17) and added two block assists for 11 points. She also had two digs and an assist.
At Missouri Western on Oct. 10, Thommes had 15 points (14 kills, 2 block assists) and hit .560 (14-0-25) with two digs as UNO picked up a 3-0 win.
She hit .444 (14-2-27) and scored 15 points (14 kills, 2 block assists) in a 3-0 loss at No. 12 Truman the next day.
