MIAA Coaches Pick Favorites in Men's, Women's Hoop

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Nebraska Omaha men's basketball team was picked to finish third in its first season of play in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Conference. The league released the pre-season coaches' poll for both men's and women's basketball at its annual luncheon today. The UNO women were placed in a tie for seventh with Pittsburg State.
The Maverick men received two first-place votes and 81 points total, just one point behind #2 Central Missouri which received one first-place vote. Southwest Baptist received 8 first-place votes and was chosen #1 with a total of 98 points.
Head coach #Derrin Hansen#'s team is coming off a school record 25-win season. The Mavericks also won the final North Central Conference playoff championship before losing in the second round of the NCAA Division II regionals to eventual national champion Winona State.
The Maverick women and Pittsburg State each received 44 points to tie for the seventh position. Washburn University was chosen first by the league's coaches with 7 first-place votes and 97 points overall. Last year, the Lady Blues won a share of the MIAA regular season title and made it to the Division II Elite Eight. They finished the season ranked fifth in the country. Emporia State, which shared the regular season title with Washburn last year, was second in the poll with 4 first place votes and 94 points overall.
Head coach Patty Patton Shearer returns 7 seniors from a team that went 17-12 last year including wins in 14 of its first 15 games.
The UNO men begin their season with an exhibition game at Iowa State on Saturday, Nov. 8 while the women begin with an exhibition game at Creighton on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
