White Team Prevails in Red/White Scrimmage, 4-3
Oct 5, 2008 | Hockey
OMAHA, Neb. - A standing-room only crowd jammed into the Moylan IcePlex Sunday afternoon to watch the White team pull out a narrow 4-3 victory over the Red team in the University of Nebraska Omaha's annual Red/White scrimmage.
The teams combined to score five goals by way of the penalty shot. Sophomore #Eric Olimb# led the way for the victorious White squad, scoring twice.
The scrimmage had an abbreviated format with three 12-minute periods. Coach #Mike Kemp# added a unique twist by awarding penalty shots instead of powerplays to the team that was the victim of a penalty. It was a sneak peak at a new rule change in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association which will hold shootouts at the end of games still tied after overtime.
Olimb and senior #Dan Charleston# kicked things off in the first, giving the White team a quick 2-0 advantage after they each converted on penalty shot chances. But senior #Tomas Klempa and sophomore Joey Martin# squared things up for the Red side at 2-all heading into the first intermission.
Junior #Eddie DelGrosso# scored the lone goal in the second when he beat Red team goalie #Jerad Kaufmann# on a penalty shot, pushing White team's lead to 3-2.
The White squad added an insurance marker in the third period on a second Olimb penalty shot, extending the lead to 4-2. Junior #JJ Koehler# cut the lead to 4-3, but that was as close as the Red team could get.
The Mavericks play their first game of the new season when they host the University of Manitoba in an exhibition contest on Monday, Oct. 13 at Qwest Center Omaha. Game time is 7 p.m.
