UNO Concludes Regular Season at No. 14 UCM

Weekly Notes
The UNO Maverick volleyball team (16-14, 12-7 MIAA) will conclude the 2008 regular season when it travels to Warrensburg, Mo. on Friday, Nov. 14 for a 7 p.m. match against 14th-ranked University of Central Missouri.
A Closer Look
The Mavericks went 2-1 last week with sweeps over Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western and a five-set loss to 10th-ranked Truman State. UNO is currently 16-14 on the season and 12-7 in the MIAA. The Mavs have won seven of their last nine matches and are ranked No. 7 in the latest NCAA II South Central Region poll.
Nebraska-Omaha has a balanced attack paced by a trio of juniors who are all averaging over 2.8 kills per set. #Sara Kampschnieder leads the team with 3.23 kills per set and nine double-doubles on the season. Ellen Thommes is hitting at a team-leading .363 clip while averaging 3.11 kills and a team-best 1.19 blocks per set. Kelli Goeser# averages 2.89 kills and 1.53 digs per set.
Freshman setter #Emily Myers# has a team-leading 11 double-doubles on the season while averaging 10.15 assists and 2.46 digs per set.
Led by junior #Kayla Jansen#'s 4.89 digs per set, the UNO defense leads the MIAA with 18.55 digs per set.
Central Missouri is currently ranked No. 14 in the nation with a 27-9 overall record and 14-5 mark in league play. The Jennies have won two-straight matches.
UCM is led by by a pair of freshmen in Allie Huffman (3.48 kps, 2.87 dps) and Paula Harris (3.41 kps, .293 hitting pct., .081 bps). Junior setter Caitlin Pankratz leads the MIAA with 12.52 assists per set.
Defensively, Central Missouri is led by sophomore Rachel Fister, who averages 5.07 digs per set. Fister also leads the team with 36 service aces.
Friday's match will mark the final home match for legendary UCM head coach Peggy Martin, who is retiring at the end of the year after 33 seasons and over 1,000 career victories. She is the winningest coach in NCAA Division II history.
The Jennies lead the all-time series 24-11, including a 3-1 victory over the Mavericks on Oct. 17 in Omaha.

In the Bison/AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll released on Nov. 10, five MIAA opponents were ranked in the top 15, including Emporia State (No. 6), Truman State (No. 9), Washburn (No. 10), Pittsburg State (No. 12), and Central Missouri (No. 14).

Thommes Earns Second MIAA POW Honor
On Nov. 10, Ellen Thommes was named the MIAA's hitter of the week for the second time this season. Thommes hit .458 (46 kills, 8 errors, 83 attempts) and averaged 5.18 points per set as the Mavericks posted a 2-1 record last week.She logged a career-best 25 kills and added four block assists to total 27 points while hitting .404 (25-6-47) in UNO's 3-2 home loss to then-No. 10 Truman State Saturday (Nov. 8). She scored six points (5 kills, 2 block assists) in the first set, and was a perfect 4-for-4 on the attack in the fifth set. Thommes hit .650 (14-1-20) and scored 16 points (14 kills, 4 block assists) with four digs in a 3-0 sweep of Missouri Western Friday (Nov. 7). In a 3-0 win at Northwest Missouri State Wednesday (Nov. 5), she scored 14 points (7 kills, 1 ace, 1 block solo, 10 block assists) and hit .375 (7-1-16).
