SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The UNO men's basketball team won its first game of the River City Classic, beating host St. Mary's University 74-70 on Saturday night at Bill Greehey Arena. Junior #Andrew Bridger# led the way with 16 points as the Mavericks held off a late charge by the Rattlers to improve to 8-1.
It took more than 2:30 for either team to put any points on the board. The Mavericks broke the ice when #Mitch Albers# converted a fastbreak with a layup. From there, UNO would build a 16-0 lead before settling for a ten-point advantage, 31-21, at the break.
Bridger hit a three-pointer, part of a 3-for-3 night from beyond the arc, to open the second half to give the Mavs their biggest lead of the night, 34-21. From there, UNO maintained an 8-10 point advantage for much of the half until the Rattlers made a late run.
When St. Mary's Nick Morey converted a layup with 1:55 remaining, UNO led by just 2 points. Bridger hit a clutch three-pointer just 33 seconds later to expand the lead to 5, but the Rattlers' Curtis Mitchell answered with a three of his own to close the gap once again to 2, 72-70, with 61 seconds to go. From there, the Mavs turned up the defense and got a pair of free throws from #Tyler Albers# to seal the win.
Tyler Albers added 14 for UNO while #Michael Jenkins# had 10. #Justin Petersen# pulled down a team-high 6 rebounds. Morey led St. Mary's with a game-high 19 points while Darren Lee chipped in 17.
The Mavericks will conclude the tournament on Sunday afternoon when they play Southeastern Oklahoma State at 5:15 p.m.
