TOPEKA, Kan. - A controversial call at the final buzzer decided a close game as the UNO men's basketball team lost to Washburn University 84-83 on Wednesday night. It was the first loss of the season for the Mavericks who were playing their first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association game.
The Mavericks had tied the game at 83-all when sophomore #Aaron Terry# hit a jumper with just 8 seconds remaining. Washburn tried a desperation shot with 2.6 seconds remaining and missed, but referees called a foul on senior #Justin Petersen# on a tip attempt as time had seemingly expired. Instead of going to overtime, Washburn's Nate Daniels was awarded two free throws and .3 seconds were put back on the clock. Daniels hit the first for the last point the Ichabods would need.
The Mavericks did not start well, shooting just 29 percent from the floor in the first half. UNO trailed 42-32 at the half.
The Mavericks were better in the second half but still trailed 65-51 with 10:44 to go in the game. UNO then went on a 24-11 run and took the lead when junior #Dion Curry# hit the Mavs' fourth consecutive free throw to make it a 76-75 game. From there, the Mavs twice built 3-point leads but couldn't hold them. Washburn's William McNeill hit a jumper with 23 seconds remaining to force the late tying shot by Terry.
The Mavericks were led by 22 points from junior #Andrew Bridger#. Sophomore #Mitch Albers# had 18 and Petersen had 13. Paul Byers led all scorers with 26 points for Washburn.
UNO is now 4-1 on the season. The Mavs' road trip continues Friday, Dec. 5 when they play Fort Hays State at 7:30 p.m.
