Maverick Women Look To Extend Streak

This Week: The UNO women's basketball team looks to extend a three-game winning streak this week when it faces the ninth-ranked Emporia State University Hornets on Wednesday, Dec. 31 and the Missouri Western State University Griffons on Saturday, Jan. 3. Both road games begin at 5:30 p.m.
The Records: The Mavericks are 4-4 this season and 1-2 in the MIAA. They picked up a 109-76 win over visiting Bemidji State University on Dec. 19. The Hornets are 10-1 on the season and 4-0 in league play. They're coming off a 83-72 win over Truman State on Monday, Dec. 29. Missouri Western is still looking for its first win of the year. The Griffons are 0-10 and 0-4 in MIAA action. They also last played on Monday when they lost to Washburn, 63-55.
The Coaches: Patty Patton Shearer is in her fifth season at UNO. She is 71-53 all time at UNO. Last year, the Mavericks started 14-1 (the best start in school history) and recorded their third-straight winning season at 17-12. A native of Marana, Ariz., Patton Shearer is a 1990 graduate of Rocky Mountain College. Brandon Schneider is in his 11th season at Emporia State, having compiled a record of 260-62 in that time. He is a 1995 graduate of Wayland Baptist. Lynn Plett is in his second season at Western. He's 12-25 there all-time and 197-203 in more than 14 years as a head coach. He is a graduate of Tabor College.
The Series: The Mavericks are 3-2 all-time against the Hornets. The two teams haven't played since a 78-76 ESU win in Omaha on Nov. 30, 2002. UNO is 5-3 all-time against the Griffons. The last time they met, Western earned a 93-74 win at St. Joseph, Mo. on Dec. 6, 1997.
Media: Saturday's game marks the first of 17 Maverick games to be broadcast on KOIL 1180 AM in Omaha. David Gustafson will call all the play-by-play beginning with the pre-game show at 5:20 p.m. The game also is available on-line at omavs.com. Both games may be viewed on-line at themiaa.tv.
