MIAA Play Resumes for Maverick Men

This Week's Release
This Week: The University of Nebraska at Omaha men's basketball team returns to play in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association this week. The Mavericks will play road games at Emporia State University on Wednesday, Dec. 31 and Missouri Western State University on Saturday, January 3. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
The Records: The Mavericks are 8-2 on the season and 2-1 in the MIAA. UNO is coming off a split of two games prior to the Christmas break. The Mavs beat St. Mary's University of San Antonio 74-70 on Dec. 20 before losing to Southeastern Oklahoma State University 81-80 in overtime on Dec. 21 at the River City Classic in San Antonio. The Hornets are 9-2 on the year and 3-1 in MIAA play. They're coming off an 63-58 win over Truman State on Monday, Dec. 29. Missouri Western is 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA. The Griffons last played on Monday as well. They picked up a 76-72 win over Washburn.
The Coaches: Derrin Hansen is in his fourth season as UNO head coach. The 1991 graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University is 60-41 as a head coach. He spent seven years at UNO as an assistant coach before taking over the head job in 2005. David Moe is in his eighth season at Emporia State. He is 123-89 all-time at that institution. He is a 1986 graduate of Texas Lutheran. Tom Smith is in his 21st season at Western. He is 391-205 there and 560-389 lifetime in more than 33 years as a head coach. He graduated from Valparaiso University in 1967.
The Series: UNO leads the all-time series with Emporia State, 17-3. The two teams played last year when the Mavericks earned a 105-91 win at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavs lead the all-time series with Missouri Western 5-4. They picked up a 78-72 victory over the Griffons in their last meeting on Nov. 27, 2007.
Media: Saturday's game will be broadcast live on KOIL 1180 AM. David Gustafson will call all of the play-by-play beginning with the pre-game show at 7:20 p.m. The game also will be available via a live web broadcast at omavs.com. Both games may be viewed on-line at themiaa.tv.
Coming Up: Next week, the Mavericks return home to host Truman State University on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. They'll hit the road for the second game of the week, at Central Missouri, on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 3:30 p.m.
