Charleston OT Goal Upsets No. 5 MSU

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Junior forward Dan Charleston scored 2:53 into overtime to give Nebraska-Omaha a 5-4 Central Collegiate Hockey Association upset of No. 5 Michigan State Friday.
UNO is now 12-12-3 overall and 9-9-3 in the conference. Michigan State remains in third place with a CCHA record of 13-3-3 and is now 17-6-5 overall. The teams conclude the two-game series today at 3:05 CST.
The Mavericks had taken a 4-2 lead in the third period, but the Spartans tied the game with goals at 8:08 by Justin Abdelkader and at 18:56 with MSU's goalie Jeff Lerg pulled, his cousin, Bryan Lerg sent the game into overtime.
After his teammates killed off his two-minute penalty for hooking early in overtime, Charleston came out of the box and scored the game-winner 15 seconds later with assists from sophomore forward JJ Koehler and junior defenseman Juha Uotila.
Sophomore forward Jeric Agosta put the Mavs on the board at 5:11 with assists from linemates sophomore Nick Fanto and freshman Matt Ambroz.
MSU evened the scored with a tally 1:02 later from Abdelkader and took the lead with a power-play goal by Corey Tropp at 11: 02 of the first.
UNO knotted the game 48 seconds into the second stanza with a power-play goal from senior Mick Lawrence off of helpers from senior forward Bryan Marshall and sophomore defenseman Eddie Del Grosso. At 8:10 senior forward Brandon Scero made it 3-2 with assists from Lawrence and freshman defenseman Eric Olimb.
Fanto scored at 4:59 of the third with assists from Ambroz and Agosta to build the 4-2 lead.
