UNO Falls to Minnesota State, 98-61

MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State, Mankato started fast against the University of Nebraska at Omaha, had five players in double figures and forced 26 turnovers Saturday in coasting to a 98-61 North Central Conference victory at Bresnan Arena. Cayla Hargrove led the Mavericks with 21 points.
The loss dropped UNO to 16-9 on the year and 2-7 in the NCC. MSU improved to 18-7 and 4-6.
UNO dug itself into a hole early, hitting just one field goal in the opening seven minutes while Minnesota State scored the first 10 points and built a 13-3 lead. MSU went on to claim a 47-33 edge at the half, taking advantage of 17 turnovers by UNO.
UNO didn't get on the board until Amanda Brodsack hit a three-pointer at the 16:54 mark, but managed to scrap back and trailed by 15-8 with 14:39 to play. MSU then went on a 12-3 run, including eight straight at one stretch and held UNO to just a Hargrove three over a six-minute stretch.
Alyssa Green and Mary Brown hit the first two shots of the second half for UNO, pulling it within 47-37 in the first minute, but that was as close as the Mavericks could come. A three-pointer by Tiffany Moe and a three-point play by Liz Trauger ended the Maverick run.
Hargrove's 21 points marked her second-best career effort. She hit 7 of 14 from the field and all six of her free throws and also added five rebounds. Green and Mary Brown each added 11 points for UNO, which shot just 33.9 percent from the field.
Heather Johnson scored 25 points, hitting 10 of 14 shots. Moe added 19, Trauger 14 to go with a game-high 10 rebounds, Alex Andrews 13 and Joanne Noreen 10. MSU outrebounded UNO, 47-33.
The Mavericks are idle until traveling to No. 3-ranked North Dakota next Saturday. UNO doesn't return home until Feb. 28, hosting Minnesota Duluth.
