Mavs Split Season-Opening Games with Mules

Chris Kessinger threw five perfect innings to lead the University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team to a 5-2 victory in its season opener, but a six-run 10th inning gave Central Missouri a 9-3 victory in the second game of the teams' doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Westside High School's Warrior Field.
Kessinger started the opening game and mowed down all 15 Central Missouri batters he faced, eight on strikeouts. Matt Eikmeier homered in his first at-bat of the season to lead off the second inning. Bryan Frew added an RBI single in the inning. Mike Rector drove in two runs with a double in the third, and Chris Weimer, who hit a school-record 18 home runs last season, hit his first of this year in the fourth, giving UNO a 5-0 lead.
The Mules (6-4) rallied for two runs against Mavericks relievers, but could not overtake them in the seven-inning contest.
UCM's pitching held the UNO bats at bay in the second game, which was scheduled for nine innings. The Mules took a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning. Brian Goliber's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh made the score 3-1. Evan Porter socked his first home run of the year, a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game.
But a grand slam by UCM's Mike Hallam off UNO reliever Brian Strawn started a six-run 10th inning to give the Mules a split in the doubleheader.
UNO's next game will be on the Mules' home field for the Holiday Inn Express tournament in Warrensburg, Mo. on Feb. 29, against Emporia State.
