Mavs Travel To Pittsburg, Kan., For Season-Opener

The University of Nebraska at Omaha will open its softball season Saturday and Sunday with five games in the Pittsburg State Invitational. UNO faces Henderson State at 10 Saturday morning to start off a three-game day. Later, UNO will meet Missouri Southern at noon and Pittsburg State at 4 p.m.
Sunday, UNO faces Southern Arkansas at 10 a.m. and caps the weekend with a noon game against Drury.
The Mavericks' first home game will be on March 28.
Last season the Mavericks advanced to the NCAA II final eight after winning the North Central Regional. They finished the year 34-20 and ranked No. 7 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. This is the highest final ranking since 2001 when the Mavericks won a national title.
The Mavericks return 12 letterwinners including five position starters and a pitcher. The returning pitcher, Melissa Negrete, (14-10) was the pitcher of record in the final seven games of the 2007 season. The team also returns the career home run leader, senior Leslie Svoboda. She comes into the season with 34 career home runs.
