Weimer Hits for Cycle in Loss to No. 18 Emporia St

EMPORIA, Kan- No. 18 Emporia State erased an early five-run lead by the Mavericks Friday, pounding out 13 hits for a 12-7 non-conference victory.
Chris Weimer hit for the cycle, going 4-for-5, to lead the Mavericks, who fell to 1-2. Emporia State improved to 4-2. The teams will meet again Saturday in a single game at noon.
Nebraska-Omaha scored five runs in the second inning, but Emporia State scored nine runs over the next two innings with six in the bottom of the second and three more in the third to claim a 9-5 lead.
The Hornets knocked Maverick started Chris Kessinger (1-1) out of the game after two and a third innings, tagging him for nine runs on seven hits. ESU reliever Daniel Waggoner struck out five batters in five innings to get the win.
Evan Porter and Drew Schwab drove in two runs each and Bryan Frew also drove in a run for the Maverick offense. Weimer singled in a run in the five-run UNO second, hit a solo homer in the fourth, tripled and scored in the seventh and completed the cycle with a double in the ninth.
