Emporia State Powers Past Mavericks, 21-14

EMPORIA, Kan.- No. 18 Emporia State used another big comeback Saturday to hand the University of Nebraska at Omaha a 21-14 non-conference loss. The Mavericks, now 1-3, will play a single game at Central Missouri Sunday at 1 p.m.
Friday, Emporia State erased an early 5-0 deficit. Saturday, after UNO scored four runs in the first and the second innings for an 8-0 lead, the Hornets pounded out 23 hits, including nine for extra bases to post the win.
The Mavericks, down 10-9, regained the lead, 12-10, in the top of the seventh after an Evan Porter double and Mat Eikmeier triple. Richard Timbrook (1-0)then came in to stop the UNO rally. The Hornets answered with five runs in the bottom of the seventh and six runs in the eight.
Chris Weimer, Porter and Eikmeier powered the offense for UNO. The three combined to go 8-for-14, including three home runs, driving in 11 of 14 runs for the Mavericks who dropped to 1-3. Emporia State improved to 5-2 and swept the two-game series.
UNO starter Ryan Hines allowed nine runs on eight hits in three innings, but Tim Huber (0-1), who came in for relief, got the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in three and a third innings.
