Mavericks Win Two to Open Season

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Mavericks kicked off their 2008 season with a pair of impressive wins Saturday afternoon in the Pittsburg State University Softball Classic. UNO beat Henderson State, 3-0, and Missouri Southern, 11-2, before dropping the nightcap of their tripleheader, 15-7, to host Pittsburg State.
UNO (2-1) will wrap up tournament play Sunday with a doubleheader against Southern Arkansas at 9 a.m. and Drury at 11a.m., followed by a trip to Kearney, Neb. next Wednesday, Mar.5, to play a doubleheader against the in-state rival Lopers.
Brianna Cataudella and Julia Krejci provided all the offense the Mavs needed in their opening game, slugging back-to-back solo homers in the second inning to lift UNO past Henderson State 3-0. Melissa Negrete did her part on the mound, striking out six batters and allowing just five hits to record the shutout victory.
The Mavs continued their offensive assault in the second game, topping Missouri Southern 11-2. Leslie Svoboda and Treightin Yates each went 2-for-3 in the game. Svoboda had an RBI double and smashed a two-run homer in the fourth, while Yates made the most of her two hits, belting a pair of two-run homeruns. Freshman Beth Haley got the win for the Mavericks, fanning one, and giving up two runs on just three hits.
UNO had no trouble scoring in the nightcap, Cataudella, Krejci and freshman Alli Hukill hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the sixth. Cataudella's was a two-run blast, while Krejci's and Hukill's were both solo shots.
But the Gorillas of Pittsburg State had little trouble scoring themselves. The Mavs used a trio of pitchers to try and slow down a PSU attack that dinged UNO pitchers for 16 hits enroute to a 15-7 victory over the Mavericks.
