UNO Opens Florida Trip with Two Wins

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha softball team opened play in the Rebel Spring Games Saturday with a pair of wins, downing Ashland, 3-1, in the opener while blanking Eckerd, 3-0, in second game of the six-day tournament.
UNO turned the tables on Ashland, which had defeated the Mavericks by the same 3-1 score in last year's Rebel Spring Games.
A four-hit sixth propelled the Mavs (7-2) to the win over Ashland. The teams were tied, 1-1, going into the sixth inning when Chanel Reaves started the attack with a single. Reaves was moved into scoring position by a Leslie Svoboda sacrifice. The second hit of the inning, a single, came off the bat of Treightin Yates. With runners on first and second, Chelsea Koch hit a single to score Reaves for the go ahead run. Lindsey Slocum, pinch hitting for Brianna Cataudella, hit the only Maverick extra base hit, a double that scored Yates to put the Mavs ahead, 3-1, where the score would remain.
Beth Haley pitched a complete game with one strikeout, improving her record to 3-0 on the season.
In the second game, UNO and Eckerd were scoreless until the fourth inning when Koch got things started with a lead off single. Amanda Bader came in to pinch run for Koch and was moved to second after a fielder's choice. Alison Jergenson smacked a base hit to score Bader for the only earned run of the game. Two more runs were added to the Maverick total in the seventh when Lynch and Jergenson both reached on errors. Lynch crossed the plate on an additional error and Jergenson on a fielder's choice.
Melissa Negrete pitched a compete game in the shutout, improving her record to 3-1.
The Mavericks continue action at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday with an 11 a.m. game against William Woods and a 3 p.m. contest with Caldwell.
