Weimer Blasts Two More as UNO Earns a Split

FT. MYERS, Fla. -- Chris Weimer went a combined 4-for-7 including his seventh and eighth home runs of the season, driving in five runs, as the University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team split two games at the Gene Cusic Classic Saturday, defeating East Stroudsburg 13-1, then falling to Ashland 11-9.
UNO pitcher Chris Kessinger improved to 3-1 after an impressive complete-game outing against East Stroudsburg, allowing one run on four hits and two walks, while striking out 11 batters. Weimer went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, and scoring three runs. Mike Rector also hit a two-run home run with three RBIs. The game was called after seven innings due to the lead.
The Mavericks' second game of the day was a wild contest with a combined 20 runs and 30 hits. Weimer again produced for the Mavericks going 2-for-4, with a triple and home run with three RBIs. Josh Shirk went 3-for-4 with a RBI.
Ashland jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning, but UNO (7-5) came back with seven runs in the first two innings. After the Eagles scratched back to within two, the Mavs got two more in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 9-5. But AU would score in each of the last three innings to win it. Blake Denoyer (0-1) took the loss.
The Mavericks will face the Eagles again Sunday morning at 9 a.m. EDT, then play Felician at noon.
