Maverick Pitchers Turn In Gems, Win Two More

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha softball team extended its winning streak to five games Sunday, sweeping an afternoon doubleheader to wrap up day-two of the Rebel Spring Games. The Mavericks topped William Woods 3-2, before blanking Caldwell 5-0 in the second contest.
Allysa Fligg and Melissa Negrete were dominant on the mound for the Mavs. Striking out thirteen between them, and allowing just nine total hits on the day. UNO (9-2) remains a perfect 4-0 in tournament play for the weekend and will play another doubleheader Monday, squaring off against Massachusetts-Lowell at 3 p.m., before taking on Chestnut Hill at 5 p.m.
The Mavericks capitalized on a pair of William Woods' miscues and were able to use a bit of small ball to squeeze by the Owls, 3-2, in the first game of the doubleheader.
Alison Jergenson scored on a past ball to open up the scoring for the Mavericks in the first, while Jenifer McDowell's first-inning RBI single pushed the lead to 2-0.
The Owls would cut the UNO lead down to 2-1 in the third, but Julia Krejci's sacrifice fly in the sixth put things out of reach, making the score 3-1.
Fligg gave up another run in the bottom half of the seventh, but finished off the complete game having given up just the two runs on eight hits. Fligg fanned six batters as she improve to 2-1 on the season with the win in the first game.
Negrete came as close as one could to perfection in the second game, pitching a one-hitter to lead the Mavs past Caldwell 5-0.
Negrete struck out seven on the day, moving her record to 4-1 on the year.
Leslie Svoboda went 1-for-2 in the game and broke open a scoreless contest in the fourth with a solo homerun. Her team-leading fifth of the year.
Even though Negrete didn't need it, UNO added some insurance runs late. Chanel Reaves drove in one in the fifth, while Treightin Yates and Alli Hukill put the finishing touches on the Maverick win with an RBI triple and two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
