Mavericks Sweep Doubleheader

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Maverick offense pounded out 29 hits and the pitching staff continued to impress Monday afternoon, as the seventh-ranked University of Nebraska-Omaha softball team won their third-consecutive doubleheader in the Rebel Spring Games. UNO beat Massachusetts-Lowell 5-2 in the first game, before blasting Chestnut Hill 13-0 in a five-inning contest later in the day.
Freshman Lindsey Slocum was stellar in her first collegiate start against the Griffins of Chestnut Hill, tossing a complete game two-hitter and striking out eight, while third-baseman Leslie Svoboda chipped in six RBIs on the day, helping the Mavs (11-2) remain unbeaten in tournament play.
A five-run first inning, highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles from Svoboda and Jenifer McDowell, was all the offense the Mavs needed to get by UMass-Lowell in the first game.
Beth Haley held the RiverHawks in check the rest of the way, allowing just five hits and fanning eight to earn her fourth victory of the season.
In the nightcap UNO flexed their offensive muscle, scoring 13 runs on 19 hits in just five innings of play.
McDowell paced the Maverick attack in the second game, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish, and driving in two, while Svoboda, who had a pair of RBIs in the first game, drove in four more runs during the second contest, getting three on a bases-clearing triple in the third.
Alli Hukill went 3-for-4, while Amanda Bader, Julia Krejci and Slocum all had doubles in the Mavs 13-0 pounding of the Griffins.
UNO continues tournament play Tuesday with another doubleheader against Philadelphia at 9 a.m. and Wisconsin-Parkside at 11 a.m.
