Mavs Split Doubleheader

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Mavericks used an Alli Hukill homerun and Leslie Svoboda two-run double to power past Philadelphia University 7-1 in the first game of their Tuesday doubleheader at the Rebel Spring Games, before having their eight-game winning streak snapped by Wisconsin-Parkside in the nightcap, 4-1.
UNO (12-3) picked up where they left off yesterday, belting out 11 hits against the Lady Rams in the first game.
Hukill's solo blast in the top of the third inning put the Mavericks out front of Philadelphia for good in the opener, while Svoboda's two-run double in the fifth provided some extra breathing room.
Treightin Yates and Julia Krejci also got in on the act, driving in runs for UNO in the first game.
Allysa Fligg threw her second complete game in as many starts, surrendering only one run on five hits and striking out nine to improve to 3-1 on the season.
The Mavericks found the going a little rougher against the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside in the afternoon contest, as they were victimized by a number of costly errors that allowed UWP to post a pair of unearned runs.
Lindsey Slocum's RBI single in the fourth was all the offense the Mavs could muster against Rangers'. UWP pitcher Meagan Shimkus shut down the UNO's potent attack, scattering six hits over seven innings of work to record the win.
Melissa Negrete had a solid outing, allowing just seven hits and fanning three, but was tagged with her second loss.
The Mavs, who are now 7-1 in the tournament, will play yet another doubleheader Wednesday, facing New Haven at 11 a.m. and Tiffin at 3 p.m.
