Mavs End Florida Trip With a Sweep

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha finished its stay in Florida at 6-3 after sweeping St. Michael's 15-4 and 12-4 Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader in the Gene Cusick Classic.
North Central Conference Pitcher of the Week Chris Kessinger (4-1) picked up the win in the first game. The Mavericks (11-8) took the suspense out of the game early, scoring 13 runs in the first four innings. NCC Player of the Week Chris Weimer went 2-for-3 with two doubles and drove in five runs and Bryan Frew belted an inside-the-park home run.
Kessinger only pitched two innings to get the win but didn't allow any hits or runs while striking out five. For the game the UNO pitching staff combined for 14 total strikeouts.
In game two, the Mavericks also jumped out early, scoring five runs in the second inning. Drew Schwab led the way for UNO, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs and just missed a cycle with a single, double and triple.
Taylor Weisbeck (2-0) was sharp in three innings of work, striking out eight on one hit and one walk and didn't allow a run. UNO again baffled the Purple Knight hitters striking out 15 more batters for a total of 29 on the day.
The Mavericks will return to action March 28-29 when they travel to Sioux City, Iowa, to take on Augustana in a four-game series.
