Mavericks Off to a 4-1 Start

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The University of Nebraska at Omaha softball team wrapped up play in the Pittsburg State University Softball Classic Sunday morning with a pair of wins. The Mavericks blanked Southern Arkansas 6-0 in the first game of their doubleheader, before handing Drury a 13-3 thrashing in the second game.
The Mavs finished the tournament with a record of 4-1, winning games against Henderson State and Missouri Southern Saturday. UNO has a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 5, in Kearney, Neb. against the in-state rival Lopers. Game times are set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Harvey Park.
UNO was able to capitalize on a pair of RBI doubles by Chanel Reaves and Leslie Svoboda in the second inning to pull away from Southern Arkansas in the first game. Reaves' double drove in Chelsea Koch, while Svoboda followed with a double that drove in both Ashley Lynch and Reaves to extend the UNO lead to 4-0 after two. Alli Hukill put the finishing touches on the Maverick victory, driving in a pair of runs with her fifth-inning triple that pushed the UNO lead to 6-0. Beth Haley pitched five scoreless innings to record the victory for the Mavs.
Lynch went 3-for-4 in the second game, belting a three-run homer in the fourth and a three-run triple in the fifth to pace a Maverick offensive attack that pounded out 17 hits in the game. Jenifer McDowell and Svoboda each posted a 3-for-4 mark in the game. McDowell had two RBIs, while Svoboda belted her third homerun of the year. Reaves, Hukill and Koch contributed to the onslaught, each tallying a double in the Maverick's 13-3 win. Melissa Negrete got the win for UNO, her second of the season, holding Drury to just five hits.
