Slocum's Blast Lifts Mavericks In Finale

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Freshman Lindsey Slocum sent the fifth-ranked University of Nebraska-Omaha softball team off in style Thursday night, capping a 12-game trip to Florida with a seventh-inning walk-off home run against Georgian Court in the Mavs final game of the Rebel Spring Games.
UNO swept a doubleheader on the day, beating Holy Family 9-1 before getting the better of Georgian Court, 6-5, in the second contest. The Mavs (16-3), who finished 11-1 for the tournament, will return home to take on in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday, Mar. 25, at Claussen-Westgate Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
The Mavericks fell in a hole early against Tigers of Holy Cross, trailing 1-0 after an inning of play.
But the Mavs wasted little time getting back into the game. In the third UNO strung together four-consecutive base hits to even things up, 1-1, before taking the lead for good on a Treightin Yates two-run single later in the inning.
Ashley Lynch and Alli Hukill added some insurance for the Mavs late. Lynch had an RBI and a pair of triples in the game, while Hukill's fifth-inning double plated two more and put the game out of reach.
Allysa Fligg went the distance for the Mavs in the first game, giving up just one run on two hits and striking out six.
Tied 5-5 after six and a half innings of play with Georgian Court in the nightcap, UNO needed just one pitch in the seventh to end things.
Slocum led things off the Mavs in the bottom of the seventh, and promptly sent the first pitch she saw from the Lion's Samantha Sasks sailing over the right-field fence to give the Mavericks a 6-5 win.
Slocum was 2-for-2 on the game with the walk-off homer, a double and four RBIs.
Beth Haley came on in relief of starter Melissa Negrete in the fourth and went four strong innings to get the win for the Mavs.
