Mavericks Sweep In-State Rival Lopers

OMAHA, Neb. -- The third-ranked University of Nebraska-Omaha softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon against in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney at Claussen-Westgate Field.
Leslie Svoboda's second-inning grand slam propelled the Mavericks (18-3) to an 11-3 win in the first game, while Beth Haley's seven shutout innings of work in the nightcap lead UNO to a 6-0 victory.
UNO and North Central Conference foe Minnesota State, Mankato will play a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday at Claussen-Westgate Field, as both teams prepare for the annual UNO Softball Classic this weekend at Dill Field.
The Lopers jumped out to a early two-run lead in the first game, plating a pair of runs in the top-half of the first inning. But UNK saw their lead promptly disappear in the bottom of the frame, as Jenifer McDowell smacked a two-run blast to straight-away center to square the game at 2-all after one.
Svoboda's second-inning grand slam, a towering shot down the left field line, was her sixth homer of the season and put the Mavs out front 6-2.
The Mavs would pour it on from there, adding four more in the third and another in the bottom of the fifth inning to invoke the eight-run mercy rule, 11-3.
Ashley Lynch hit a three-run shot in the third, while McDowell added two more RBIs on the game to finish the contest with a total of four.
Beth Haley pitched seven shutout innings in the nightcap to complete the sweep, holding UNK to just four hits.
The Mavs broke open a scoreless tie in the third inning, scoring three runs to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
Leslie Svoboda, Treightin Yates, Alli Hukill and Ashley Lynch all drove in runs for the Mavs, while Alison Jergenson and Brianna Cataudella were able to capitalize on Loper miscues to push the final to 6-0.
