No. 3 UNO Takes Two From No. 23 MSU

OMAHA, Neb. -- The third-ranked University of Nebraska-Omaha softball team opened North Central Conference play with a pair of hard-fought victories over No. 23 Minnesota State University, Mankato Friday afternoon at Claussen-Westgate Field, defeating MSU 3-2 in extra innings in the first game and 3-0 in the second.
Leslie Svoboda's RBI double in the bottom of the ninth drove in the winning run for UNO (20-3, 2-0 NCC) in the opener, while a Treightin Yates two-run homer to right sealed things in the nightcap.
UNO will play a tripleheader Saturday, opening the UNO Softball Classic at Dill Field with games against Washburn at 9 a.m., Pittsburg State at 11 a.m., and Truman State at 3 p.m.
Trailing 2-0, UNO evened things up at 2-all in the bottom of the sixth in the first game, as MSU pitcher Megan Teal struggled with her control and walked in a pair of runs.
UNO had a chance to put the game away an inning later, but Chanel Reaves was thrown out at home ending the threat and sending the game into extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth inning, UNO caught a brake with two outs in the ninth, as Teal mishandled a grounder that allowed Alison Jergenson to reach base safely.
Jergenson put herself in scoring position by stealing second and scored the winning run a moment later when Svoboda roped a double down the right-field line.
Melissa Negrete pitched all nine innings for UNO in the first contest, giving up two runs on six hits to record her seventh win of the season.
The nightcap saw both teams' offenses stall, as UNO's Beth Haley and MSU's Samantha Rohr allowed a combined 7 hits in what was a real pitchers duel.
Jenifer McDowell's RBI sacrifice fly and Yates' two-run bomb to right in the sixth broke open the scoreless deadlock and was all the offense UNO needed, shutting down MSU for a 3-0 victory.
MSU's Rohr gave up just four hits in the game, while Haley allowed a mere three.
Haley struck out six MSU batters and only let two baserunners advance past first base the entire game to remain a perfect 8-0 on the season.
