Eikmeier, Mavs Slug Way to Sweep of Vikings

Mat Eikmeier had five hits, including two home runs, and drove in seven runs on the day, as the University of Nebraska at Omaha swept a nonconference baseball doubleheader against Augustana, 15-4 and 6-2, Saturday afternoon at Boys Town.
Just as they did in the opener of Friday's doubleheader, the Mavericks (14-9) exploded to a big lead early. The Vikings struck for two runs in the top of the first, but a sacrifice fly by Dustin Koca and an RBI double by Evan Porter tied it up. UNO blew the game open early, scoring seven runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run single by Eikmeier and a home run by Brian Strawn.
Augustana (5-13) struck for two in the top of the third, but Eikmeier bombed a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning, making the score 12-4. UNO tacked on three more in the fifth, with Koca driving in two more with a double. Tim Huber went the distance on the mound, striking out 10, improving his record to 2-1.
With the Mavericks playing as the visiting team in the second game, Eikmeier got the big hit right out of the gate, socking his second homer of the day in the top of the first for a quick 3-0 UNO lead.
Taylor Weisbeck (3-0) turned in a strong performance on the mound, going five and a third innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits, striking out five. He got into a jam in the bottom of the sixth with the Mavs protecting a 4-2 lead, but Strawn moved from his third base position to the mound to bail the team out. He would finish the game for his second save of the season, also driving in two insurance runs in the seventh with a double.
The Mavericks' next scheduled game is Saturday, April 5, when they host North Dakota in the opener of the final North Central Conference season. The teams will play two games, starting at 1 p.m. at Boys Town, with another doubleheader the following day.
