Mavericks Work Overtime to Sweep Duluth

After a convincing 10-1 victory in the opener, the University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team needed 14 innings to earn a 3-2 win and a sweep of North Central Conference rival Minnesota Duluth Sunday afternoon at Boys Town.
Chris Kessinger earned his seventh win of the year, tossing a complete game for UNO (22-9, 6-0 NCC) in the opener, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out 10. Chris Weimer had RBI singles in the third and fourth innings, helping the Mavs to an early 3-0 lead. Josh Shirk and Mike Rector each notched a two-run single in the sixth, highlighting a seven-run outburst to put the game well out of reach.
The nightcap took 14 innings to settle, ending on Evan Porter's third hit of the game, a run-scoring single with the bases loaded and one out. Dustin Koca went 10 innings on the mound, giving up two runs on just three hits and and three walks, while fanning seven. Brian Goliber connected for RBI singles in the second and fourth innings, but UMD's Josh Threlkeld drove in two with a single in the third.
The Bulldogs (13-12, 1-5 NCC) threatened in the top of the 11th against reliever Brandon Dahl, getting a runner into scoring position. But Brian Strawn moved from third base to the mound and ended the inning by picking a runner off first base. Strawn finished out the game to earn his second win of the season.
The Mavericks and Bulldogs will meet for another doubleheader Monday at 1 p.m.
