Mavs Sweep Duluth, Win Streak Extends to 12

Tim Huber struck out a career-high 14 batters and Dustin Koca drove in six total runs, as the University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team completed a four-game weekend sweep of North Central Conference rival Minnesota Duluth, 11-10 and 14-2, extending its winning streak to 12 games, Monday afternoon at Boys Town.
The first game was a back-and-forth affair which saw the lead change hands three times. The Bulldogs took advantage of a shaky start by UNO's Taylor Weisbeck, plating three runs in the top of the first. But the Mavs got the three right back on a two-run double by Evan Porter and a single by Brian Strawn. An RBI groundout by Koca gave UNO (24-9, 8-0 NCC) the lead in the fourth. A two-run homer by Koca highlighted a four-run third inning that gave the Mavericks an 8-3 lead.
UMD (13-14, 1-7 NCC) rallied, however, scoring three runs each in the fourth and sixth, retaking the lead at 9-8. Porter tied the game right back up in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run, his seventh of the season. But Tyler Erickson's second home run of the game, in the top of the seventh, put the Bulldogs back in front, 10-9.
The Mavericks would rally one more time, scoring two unconventional runs in the last of the seventh. Chris Weimer tied the game again with a run-scoring fielder's choice, then later scoring the winning run on a wild pitch. Blake Denoyer (1-2) got the win for UNO, throwing the final inning and a third.
Huber had another strong outing in the second game to improve to 4-1. The senior lefty tossed his third complete game, allowing two runs on four hits, with his career-high 14 strikeouts.
UNO jumped out to a huge lead early in the second game. A two-run single by Koca highlighted a five-run first. After Duluth got two back in the second, Porter and Strawn had RBI singles in the bottom of the inning, then Josh Shirk and Koca drove in two more in the third. Bryan Frew added a two-run double in the fourth, as the Mavs tacked on three runs for a 12-2 lead. Travis Jacobi added a two-run homer in the sixth.
The Mavericks take on future MIAA opponent Fort Hays State for another doubleheader Tuesday at 1 p.m. back at Boys Town.
